The Mistress of Spices by C. B. Divakaruni. Review.

August 2, 2018

Hello, friends, booklovers. I am so delighted to speak about this amazing book today.

The Mistress of Spices.

Tilo is an immigrant from India. She lives within the walls of the shop, filled with spices and Indian produce, but there is more than meets the eye… Tilo is not just an lady selling spices, she is also a priestess of the secret magical powers.

She must use her powers wisely, to follow the rules without exception. The spices demand respect and obedience, the spices are powerful, more powerful than Tilo herself or any other priestess before her . She must refuse the temptation of forbidden desires, for if she will not, she will lose her magical powers and destroy lives of those, for whom she cares the most.

This is the very first novel written by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni, and, let me tell you, what a beautiful novel it is! Full of aroma and spices. Full of magic. The difficult subject of immigration, Indian culture and traditions, challenges immigrants face in America, combined and written in such a beautiful, poetic style. What a treat this book is!

Personally for me, there was enough romance and reality, love and hate, laughter and tears, all in perfect balance. It was one of my favourite books this year.
